First edition. The author was asked to present lectures at Andover Seminary in 1866 and then several other seminaries, to provide practical views on the subject of foreign missions -- the opportunity and field of work, the preparation necessary, the nature of the work, the successes, hindrances at home and abroad, and how they can be dealt with. There is some history of mission work, historical development of modern missions, value of native churches, missionary life, claims of missions on young missionaries, and more. Several appendices provide information on secular newspapers and religious intelligence, English mission schools, and more. Hardcover, bound in three-quarters leather and marbled boards, gilt decorations and titles in a maroon band on the spine. Cover is faded, chips to top and bottom of spine, library number on bottom of spine, and nice-looking bookplate on inside front cover showing that it was presented to the Library of the Pacific Theological Seminary by the author, with his signature. A few other library markings, including paper residue on the inside back cover and endpaper. …
