Hal Gulliver wrote these essays for the Atlanta Constitution in the period from the early 1960’s to the early 1980’s. He was a young reporter when he joined the paper, and he was the editor when he left its offices in 1982. As Gulliver tells it, his beat in the early 1960’s included “politics, civil rights, and general foolishness.” All of these pieces were written under deadline pressure, which according to the author, “is by no means the worst way to write.” The first section of A Friendly Tongue offers “Perspectives on (and from) the Deep South” – mainly on Southern politics and the civil rights revolution, although there are articles here from places as far away as Israel and South Africa.
