Kennard' - Scarce autograph of the woman described as 'Harborough's forgotten novelist' (J. D. Bennett, in 'The Harborough Historian', 2001) - Mary Eliza Kennard (1850 TO 1936) was an English novelist and writer of non-fiction. Most of her work was published under the name of: Mrs Edward Kennard. - Kennard specialised in stories of the English Country House world of hunting, shooting and fishing, and in her heyday was dubbed: "the Diana of fiction", in honour of Diana, the Roman goddess of hunting. - The book contains 14 short stories. - Condition of the book: Green cloth with black and red illustration of a man on a horse, who is fox hunting. The image is faded in parts but still a very obvious illustration. On the spine, the title of the book is at the top in gold gilt, and although you can still read it, it has faded with time. In the middle of the spine, there is an outline of the riding crop and a bugle, and the author's name runs through this illustration. At the bottom of the spine is the publishers name. On the reverse of the book [rear panel], is a decorative symbol of the publishers initials. The cloth is frayed around the extremities, and mainly so to the corners and top and bottom of the spine. There is also a fair amount of soiling. There is also a small tape repair to the top front of the spine. - Overall, it's a fair condition for a book that is over 135 years old. There are decorative end pages front and rear, all present, although fairly browned. As stated above, the signature of 'Mary E. Kennard', is pasted on to the blank endpage opposite the full title page. It is on similar aged paper as the book is published on, so I presume it has been here for over a hundred and thirty years. The page block is tightly bound and there are no loose pages. The fourteen stories command 226 pages and there are numerous pages to the rear given to advertising. At the end of the 226 pages there is a list of F.V. White & Co's other publications and this is dated January, 1889. The list of other publications covers a further 16 pages. There isn't any soiling to the pages, there's more of a hue to the page edges, which is age related. Overall, a very good condition. - Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days.
