Add to basketFirst edition of Reuben Iceland's From Our Springtime (Fun Unzer Friling), the memoir of one of the central figures of early 20th-century American Yiddish literature and member of the Di Yunge literary movement.
This is a scarce signature from Reuben Iceland, who's papers are kept at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research- a must have volume for collectors.
This copy appears inscribed and signed by the author on the front fixed endpaper in Yiddish:
'To my friend
the radio commentator
Ya'akov Sherter
Cordially,
R. Ayzland
Miami Beach, Jan 1955'
This translation provided February 2026 by Yiddish literature scholar at the YIVO Institute- buyer may confirm accuracy of translation with photos prior to purchase.
With the date of January 1955, the inscription was written months before Iceland's death in June of 1955, situating this volume as a rare, historically significant connection between a major Yiddish literary figure and the Jewish radio community of mid-century Miami.
Condition
Very good (wearing, but no tears). Original hardcover binding is solid and tight. Shelf wear at top and bottom of spine, wear along spine edges; text block complete, untorn, and intact. Pages yellowed with age; light foxing confined to front and rear endpapers, on the author's photograph page and around the inscription. No other writing or markings observed apart from a penciled previous price listing. See photos for these areas and typical examples of the text.
Provenance & Significance
Inscription may illustrate a personal and professional relationship between Iceland and Ya'akov Sherter, a Yiddish radio commentator in Miami Beach in the 1950s.
Reflects the intersection of Yiddish literary and broadcast culture in postwar America.
Price
$375 (offers considered; reflects first edition, inscription, provenance, and very good condition).
