First edition, first printing. A unique and exceptional rarity and a superb Pullman highlight. SIGNED to title-page, and with the day of publication added - "October 12th 1978." Publication dated Pullman's are extremely rare in any case; examples from his very early works are almost non-existent. In addition, Pullman has handwritten the following apt line of text from p.205 of his novel: "you won't get far in this place until you can deal with unreality." Galatea is the author's second novel for adults, and a work he's always felt particular affection toward. Condition: a wholly superior copy, beautifully preserved; in our experience, I would say under ten per cent of copies that surface still retain the dark green (unfaded) jacket spine, as shown here; the vast majority show jacket spines that have significantly faded. The book itself is uncommonly crisp, and a Very Fine example with beautifully clean and unfaded boards. The first state dust-wrapper ("£5.75") is similarly superb. All in all, a unique and lovely highlight of this very early work by a fabulous (and fabulously collectible) author. Probably the best copy we've come across, and certainly so with these special attributes.
