About this Item
First edition. 649 pages, "with 379 plates containing 534 drawings." Very good condition, a sound copy with two minor spots on the rear board, light foxing on the title page. This copy has a remarkable pedigree, being passed down within three generations of the Johns Hopkins medical community. It was originally presented by the author to the new Assistant Professor Dr. John Eager Howard (and bears Howard's armorial bookplate inside the front board): "To Dr. John Eager Howard with the gratitude of Hugh Young for great assistance and many many kindnesses, Sept. 1937." Thirty-eight years later Dr. Howard in kind passed it along with the presentation note "To Howard Jones who will use it to far better advantage than will I. JEH. 1975." The author, Hugh Hampton Young, was the head of the urology department, is credited with developing the radical perineal prostatectomy for prostate cancer, and was instrumental in developing the Brady Urological Institute's protocol assigning gender for intersex patients. Dr. John Eager Howard, an endocrinologist, became assistant professor at Johns Hopkins in 1937, the year he received this book, and went on to gain national recognition for pioneering work on causes and treatment of kidney stones. Finally, the final recipient Dr. Howard Jones had a long and illustrious career in the field of reproductive medicine. He oversaw the research program that led to the landmark first successful fertilization of a human egg in the laboratory, and collaborated with his wife to oversee the 1981 birth of the first "test tube baby" in 1981. He's now likely more widely known for having been the first physician at John Hopkins to examine Henrietta Lacks, the African American patient with cervical cancer whose cells were (unknowingly to her) stored and eventually were the first to be reproduced continuously in the laboratory, a groundbreaking development in medical research. Finally, it should be noted that there are a few notes in light pencil regarding errors in the text which were presumably made by Dr. Jones; inside the front board he notes "Errors 410, 54, 322, 337," and on those pages he circles the error and sometimes offers his critique, perhaps underscores the significance of the case, in one case writes "grave error." He made some minimal marks or notes (always in pencil) on a number of other pages as well. Seller Inventory # 023526
