First Edition inscribed by author in year of publication on front free endpaper: "To Mildred and Sam Jaffe--with my best-- Mackinlay Kantor-- December- 1945" Below this inscription is a circular "From the Library of Rock Hudson" emboss. This Sam Jaffe is not the well-known actor who played Dr. Zorba on Ben Casey but rather Sam Jaffe the agent, studio executive & producer who successfully represented many leading Hollywood luminaries including Humphrey Bogart, Fritz Lang, Raoul Walsh, Stanley Kubrick, David Niven, Zero Mostel. Richard Burton, Mary Astor and Barbara Stanwyck. How the book migrated to Rock Hudson is unknown. Book shows some edge wear, minor discoloration & cloth bubbling on front board. Dustjacket is a facsimile in Fine Condition under mylar. An epic narrative poem, deemed nearly unpublishable at the time of its release, which became the basis for the 1948 film "The Best Years of Our Lives." directed by William Wyler. and starring Myrna Loy, Fredric March, Dana Andrews, Teresa Wright, Virginia Mayo and Harold Russell. The film is about three United States servicemen re-adjusting to societal changes and civilian life after coming home from World War II. The three men come from different services with different ranks that do not correspond with their civilian social class backgrounds. It is groundbreaking as one of the earliest films to address issues of trauma & disability encountered by returning veterans in the post World War II era. The movie won the 1947 Academy award for Best Picture, as well as seven other Oscars, including two which went to Harold Russell, the only time in history when two Oscars were awarded for the same role. One was honorary; no one thought he would win by vote & the Academy wanted to acknowledge Russell's performance. It was also a commercial hit, the highest-grossing film in both the United States and United Kingdom since "Gone With the Wind.".
