Grade 1-4?Grunt is a hapless hunter, but finds that when he sketches animals in the sand and on cave walls, they show up in huge numbers. This makes the hunters of his tribe happy, but their greed forces the boy to keep doodling until the creatures no longer come. Now the angry men want to throw Grunt over a cliff, but he asks for one more chance and draws an animal he hasn't drawn before: a wild ox. The oxen come, Grunt uses them to teach his tribe to become food growers, and all ends well. Bush is an accomplished artist and his animated, cartoonstyle illustrations mesh well with the fast-moving tale. The anti-hunting message is a tad heavy-handed, but balanced by humor. Funny details abound. The realistically drawn creatures often sport anthropomorphized facial expressions: look for the grumpy woolly rhinoceros and friendly, bemused penguins (or, as they're better known, great auks). Grunt is not particularly sympathetic; he's buffoonish and exaggerated in his poses and reactions.
