Greed seems to be the story of professional sports today. Simon, a Minneapolis-based agent for players in various sports, illustrates that point by describing the science of dealing with professional sports teams. The advent of players' agents and free agency may have swung the pendulum away from the owners' position, but if one accepts the premise that owners are apparently willing to pay large salaries to remain competitive (and therefore increase profits), then perhaps some balance has been achieved. The author describes his relations with teams (generally adversarial) and with the players he represents (generally friendly). The vignettes are mostly about players on Minneapolis teams or those born in that area. While this may limit the book's scope, it also serves to provide insight into the negotiations of small-market teams. Recommended for public and school libraries in the upper Midwest and public libraries with extensive sports collections.
