About this Item
First edition of this work by the Irish dramatist and memoirist. Octavo, original cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper in the year of publication, "From Sean O'Casey to his dear friend Joe Cummins, Whose companionship, through hours of eventide, he often misses deeply Chalfont St Gilles 1933." Near fine in very good dust jacket. Darkly allegorical, O'Casey's Within the Gates is set within the gates of a busy city park based on London's Hyde Park. O'Casey originally imagined that the heavily stylized play would become the basis for an Alfred Hitchcock film, but it swiftly proved to be a box office failure. Seller Inventory # 106738
