The State University of Michigan in Michiganapolis is exactly like your own alma mater. The chair of the English department is a bisexual harasser, the latest arrival a closeted gay male, the internal candidate he beat to the appointment a zestfully bitchy female, his other colleagues phony careerists and ex-Nazis. Only one of them, though, can have killed the newcomer, Perry Cross, and inoffensive Nick Hoffman is sure it isn't his lover, writer-in-residence Stefan Borowski. As long as Stefan's innocent, Nick doesn't care which of the others did it, and since there's no way to choose among the cast's shopworn secrets, you won't care either. As if to justify one character's sniffy claim that mysteries aren't real literature, Lambda-winner Raphael (Winter Eyes, 1992, etc.) salts this slender puzzle with allusions to Wilde, Cocteau, Henry James, Agatha Christie, and Moonstruck. -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. English professor Nick Hoffman is mightily suspicious when obnoxious Perry Cross, with whom he has to share his office, is hired in a nontenured position with a tenure-track salary (i.e., more than his). When (before the semester is over) Cross turns up dead and a leading suspect in what soon seems to be murder is Nick's life partner, Nick becomes obsessed with discovering the truth about Cross and his murderer. Interestingly enough for followers of Raphael's career, Nick's partner is Stefan Borowski, protagonist of Raphael's enthralling first novel, Winter Eyes (1992). That book may have had its mysteries--Stefan's discoveries of his Jewishness and his gayness--but it was not a murder mystery. This book may be a murder mystery, but it is more rewarding when regarded as a lengthy monologue by a protagonist-narrator, Nick, whom some will find annoyingly chatty and self-absorbed but others will consider delightfully loquacious, if a trifle batty. Consider it a mystery for those who don't especially like mysteries. Ray Olson

Terms of sale
Payments: Payment can be made by cheque, money order, VISA and MASTER CARD.
Cheques and money orders should be made payable to, John Thompson, and U.S.
cheques or money orders are no problem for my bank. Please Note: Postal Money orders
from the U.S. must be marked as International Money Orders (pink/orange color).
My bank will no longer accept those marked cashable in U.S. and possessions only
(green color)! When mailing payment, please make sure your letter has sufficient
postage, as the U.S. Postal Service does charge more for letters mailed to
Canada. It is always helpful to mention what book you're ordering in your
letter. For VISA & Master Card orders, I need your credit card number,, its
expiry date, and the three digit security number on the back of the card. Credit card orders can then
be shipped right away. Overseas buyers, please be sure to mention if you
want regular mail or air mail with your order.
Abebooks.com orders: You can also order with your credit card through abe's
secure web site. The postage is automatically calculated and added. If the
amount is too high, say on multiple book orders, or too low, I can adjust the
amount. You then have the option of accepting or rejecting the new charge. There
is no way that the charge can increase without your approval. Of course, the
amount can be decreased without your approval. Canadian buyers note that I will
sometimes increase the charge for the GST, as abe does not automatically include this in
the total (tax number 140096355RT0001). Orders sent to the US or overseas are
often sent via Canada Post's small packet rate, which is cheaper than parcel
(order must weigh less than 1 kilogram, above that is parcel only). Both surface
mail and air mail are available that way. Please note that oversas surface mail can be very slow, 2 to 4 months to arrive. The surface mail ratew I charge on overseas orders often enables me to ship by air anyway, if the order weighs less than 250 grams and sometimews 500 grams. Above that the cost of overseas air greatly increases. The small packet rate is not available
for packages sent to a Canadian address. Those have to be sent via parcel rate,
unless the order is thin and light enough to ship as an oversize letter, also known as regular mail.
Oversize letter orders must be less than 20 millimeters thick and less than 500
grams. The letter rate is always first class and may be cheaper than small
packet for US orders (letter will always be cheaper than parcel for Canadian
orders). I will always ship via oversize letter mail whenever possible for orders within North America, unless the priority mail option is chosen. Tracking - if tracking is required on your order, then please choose the priority mail option. Tracking is more costly and I usually only use it when the buyer chooses pririty shipping.
All book images are of the actual book that I have, even when I have multiple copies of the same book. New book listings will have the images added within a week or so of being listed, as they all have to be uploaded separately. So my newest book listings may not have pictures, but they will get them within a week or so..
In 2020 I purchased two large collections, of mostly vintage paperbacks. It will likely take until 2022 to get all of these listed, but I do have have fresh stock added weekly. If you click on my name, you will get the search engine for my listings and my list of catalogues. On the left side of that page will be a line that says 'view this seller's items'. Clicking on that will show my listings in chronological order, so the new arrivals are listed first, and a portion of those may not have images yet.
Phone calls: I'm usually available from 6 to 9 PM central time, weekends
included. The number below is my home number as I have a home based business. I
would appreciate it if you could confine your calls to between 7 am and 10 pm
central time. If I am out you can leave a message on my machine which goes on
after the 4th ring. It's always a good idea to e-mail your address, as errors
may occur from voice messages. You can reach me at 204-837-8898. I'm always out
during the day on weekends, and am in and out during the day on weekdays. Long distance calls are expensive for me, so I do not return long distance calls. E-mail works best. I do check my email at least once a day, and I confirm all orders. My web site is http://bookmanonline.com .
