Presentation copy from the author to David Lodge inscribed to the ffep- "For David and Mary in friendship', Dick. 16.2.84. Norman Road". Also signed by Ellman to the title page. Lodge and Ellman first met after Ellman, an American, was appointed Goldsmith Professor and a Fellow of New College, Oxford, and a mutual American friend and academic, Larry Ziff, discovered that Ellman was a great fan of Lodge's campus novel, 'Changing Places'. Lodge writes amusingly about their friendship in his second memoir, 'Writer's Luck' at pages 130-131. Lodge was expected to succeed Ellman as Goldsmith Professor but the university appointed an internal candidate- see WL at pages 169 and 184. First Faber paperback edition. A VG plus copy.
