Two Typed Manuscripts. Each composed of three quarto sheets, typed rectos only, totaling six pages. About very good with dampstaining mostly at the bottom edge and one corner, oxidation at upper left corner from old staples (one staple lacking) and scattered light creases. Signed by Malcolm X at the bottom of the final page. Two three-page typescripts for a column written by Malcolm X titled "God s Angry Men," which debuted in the Black-owned New York Amsterdam News in April 1957 and was picked up by the Los Angeles Herald Examiner in July 1957. The typescripts include more than 40 corrections and additions in Malcolm s own hand, including the insertion of new words or phrases, a change from first-person to third person throughout, and the capitalization of the pronoun s referring to Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad. Malcolm X manuscripts are rare, something this early is even more so. This column appeared in the New York Amsterdam News in the spring of 1957, in the months following Malcolm s highly visible intervention in the Johnson Hinton case, when he organized and led the Nation of Islam s response to the brutal police beating of a Harlem member outside a bar. That incident is widely understood as a turning point in his Harlem reputation, consolidating a form of street-level authority that no prior speech had yet achieved. The Amsterdam News founded in 1909 and by mid-century one of the longest-running Black newspapers in the United States offered precisely the readership Malcolm wanted to reach: a predominantly Black audience in Harlem already inclined to question police narratives and the white institutional structures that supported them. Syndication in the Los Angeles Herald Examiner in July extended that voice across the continent to Black communities in Los Angeles engaged in their own contested relationships with the LAPD. What these typescripts make visible, through more than forty handwritten interventions, is the deliberateness with which Malcolm distinguished between an individual voice and an institutional platform. The revisions from first-person to third-person narration are not merely stylistic refinements; they shift the column from memoir or personal essay toward doctrinal pronouncement, presenting its arguments as those of the Nation of Islam rather than of a single minister. The systematic capitalization of pronouns referring to Elijah Muhammad performs a parallel function at the level of typography, inscribing on the page the honorific conventions that structured NOI speech and marked the movement s internal hierarchy. Taken together, these revisions show Malcolm constructing, line by line, the public rhetorical posture that would define his Nation of Islam years: an absolute deference to organizational authority articulated through an unmistakably forceful and disciplined prose voice. That posture, as the historical record makes clear, would not remain fixed. By 1964 Malcolm had broken with the Nation of Islam, and the theological certainties encoded in these pages had given way to a more expansive, ecumenical, and internationally oriented politics that many scholars regard as still more threatening to established power precisely because it was no longer bounded by a single institution. These typescripts, however, belong to the earlier period, when the architecture of his public rhetoric was still being built within the strictures of NOI discipline. As primary documents from that process of construction bearing both the marks of composition and the traces of a now-vanished institutional alignment they are, in both the bibliographical and historical sense, genuinely scarce.
