About this Item
First edition, first printing. 298 pp. 8vo. Inscribed in blue ink to the family of Roth's childhood friend and Leslie street neighbor from Union City New Jersey, Marty Castlebaum; "To the Castebaums - with best wishes and fond recollections. I hope you'll like what comes after this." Beneath this is "5/7/1959" written in an unknown hand in black ink. A laid in note from Roth dated 9/7/1988 in blue ink states, "This date is not in my handwriting. It's more than likely the day the received the book from me." The book in fact was released on 5/7/1959 Marty Castlebaum is mentioned in a December 1988 article of Moment magazine written by Roth titled 'Philip Roth Enters the Gentile World: An Autobiographical Vignette' in which he attributes Castlebaum as somewhat of an inspiration for Roth to leave his parent's home and attend college, essentially a formative figure who Roth saw as moving into adulthood and made him want to do the same. Black cloth boards with white and yellow lettering on spine, toning at edges; overall very good. Inscribed on ffep. Dust jacket is price clipped, has some toning at edges and light edge wear, else near fine. Seller Inventory # 324739
