About this Item
Very Good (covers nice & bright; contents clean & tight); very minor wear & light soil d/j. A very nice & interesting copy! Small 8vo., dark purple cloth in dust jacket; 265 pages First Edition. Wonderful signed presentation from Cordell on the title page: "Richard A. Cordell. For Henry Clark with good wishes- and as Dorothy Parker wrote in a book for me `huge quantities of them.'" Enclosed are a two-page autographed letter and a postcard from Cordell to Clark, with original envelope. Two-page autographed letter signed, dated "Rossetti's Birthday [so May 12] 1979." "I have always imagined Lady Macbeth as far more petite and feminine than horsey, or Margaret Thatcher." Goes on to discuss Macbeth as a character. "Shaw declared he was a descendant of Macduff. Fictionally? Shaw, by the way, lived on Synge Street in Dublin, and Synge live on Shaw Street." Further, "I just read the worst book I have ever read: Martin's life of Henry Miller- a bastard of the first dishwater. [He is referring to Jay Martin's "Always Merry And Bright: The Life Of Henry Miller"]. "I met him [Miller] once in his cross-country jaunt that produced Air-Conditioned Nightmare. I liked the book." He continues: "Some anonymous clown has sent me a paperback collection of Ozark folk stories, with the dainty title Pissing In The Snow. Want it?" He then asks what Clark enjoys "besides literature." "I certainly will read Paris Portraits.the new book on the Sitwells I hope to come across. I had not known that Sach was so gay (silly use of a word)." He discusses nose cancer that he has. "My nose will be the death of me." On the postcard, Cordell writes about having surgery on his nose over a period of three weeks. "Very annoying." Discusses a new play and very hot temperatures where he lives. Henry Arthur Jones was one of the most significant group of drama pioneers, along with Bernard Shaw, John Galsworthy, Arthur Wing Pinero, J.M. Barrie and Oscar Wilde [from the dust jacket]. However, Wilde was not a fan of Jones, writing once that "There are three rules for writing plays. The first rule is not to write like Henry Arthur Jones; the second and third rules are the same." An interesting copy with the related materials. Seller Inventory # 56945
