[Vol.1] ix, (1), 880; [Vol.2] viii, (2), 875 pp., illustrated with portrait frontispieces, and photographic portrait plates. Bound in burgundy cloth, with the title on the front board and spine n gilt. Minor shelf wear to the boards, and a small drop of stain on Vol. 1's spine. Pages 259-270 are loose, and laid in. A Very Good set. *** A Presentation copy, with a SIGNED letter from the author, affixed to the dedication page. The letter addressed to Mr. J. Eliot Coit, and written on University of North Carolina letterhead, dated 1908, reads: "My Dear Mr. Coit, Please allow me to present you with a copy of my History of U. N. C. I trust you will be interested in it for the sake of your grandfather, his associates and his University. It will go by express prepaid. Very truly, Kemp P. Battle". Mr. Coit is a graduate of North Carolina State, and goes on to become "The Father of the Avocado Industry in California". From 1913 to 1917, Coit was Professor of Citriculture, at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1919 he founded the "Coit Agricultural Service". Interspersed among the pages of Vol. 1 are several notes, concerning Coit's ancestry, one written on stationary from "Coit Agricultural Services". Also, laid in, are newspaper articles about Elisha Mitchell, the namesake of Mt. Mitchell in western NC, indicating that Mrs. Mitchell was a relation to Coit. COit's grandfather, referred to in the letter from Battle, was a Captain in service to the CSA. A detailed index at the rear lists all the graduates of UNC to 1868, with accomplishments and Confederate Service, including where they were killed in battle. Seller Inventory # 004726
