Two vols. in one. 8vo. 669, [3] pp. Dark blue publisher's cloth, gilt lettering, w/ d.j. cover art by Bob Eggelton (slight shelfwear), NF/NF copy, signed by the author on the title. First edition, thus, signed by the author of the two novels which launched McDevitt's career, including a revised "The Hercules Text" which was winner of the 1986 Philip K. Dick Special Award, and Locus Award for best first novel.

Hello, Out There contains The Hercules Text, winner of the 1986 Philip K. Dick Special Award, and A Talent for War. The Hercules Text has been totally rewritten and updated for this edition.
Most of us are attracted to the idea that the human race is not alone. Encountering other beings, we believe, will be romantic, exciting, thought-provoking, intriguing. And possibly dangerous. After all, one of our time-honored notions since H.G. Wells is that we may well be perceived by Others as little more than snacks, or subjects for religious conversion, or creatures of such insignificance as to be simply swept aside. No matter, we think cheerfully. We will take the risk.
McDevitt suggests the hazards may be far more subtle. In Hello, Out There, contact with alien species forces us to rethink who we are and what we are about. The Hercules Text recounts a clash of wills in which the mere knowledge that someone is out there ignites profound changes in religious, political, and social behavior. In its companion novel, A Talent for War, contact forces us to rethink a cherished mythology, and ask ourselves whether truth might not sometimes demand too high a price.
Here are two voyages into the unknown, twin expeditions to demonstrate that when we finally encounter whatever other intelligences Darwin has cast onto the cosmic beach, we may discover that the face looking back at us is our own.

About the Author
Other novels are A Talent for War (Ace, 1989); The Engines of God (Ace, 1994), an Arthur C. Clarke Award finalist; Ancient Shores (HarperPrism, 1996), a Nebula finalist; Eternity Road (HarperPrism, 1997), winner of the Darrell Award; Moonfall (HarperPrism, 1998), a Nebula finalist; and Infinity Beach, (HarperPrism, 2000).
Several pieces of shorter fiction have been short-listed for the Nebula and the Hugo, and "Ships in the Night" won the $10,000 first prize in the UPC International Novella competition in 1992. A collection of McDevitt's short fiction, Standard Candles, is available from Tachyon Press.
McDevitt has been a Philadelphia taxi driver, a naval officer, an English teacher, a customs officer, and a motivational trainer for federal and state law enforcement officials. He lives in Brunswick, Georgia, with his wife Maureen.

All books are in fine condition unless otherwise stated. Postage will be added to all shipments. Because
of rate increases by the U.S. Post Office shipping rates will be as follows: for Priority Mail, $ 15.95 up to
2 lbs., $ 35.95 for 2-4 lbs., each additional volume $ 6.50; book rate will be $ 8.00 (unusually large or
heavy books will be charged accordingly, and we ship book rate, for large folios, larger books, sets, or
any others by special request). Delivery confirmation, and/or insurance added to the shipment must be
requested and paid for by the purchaser -- no exceptions. All items over $ 75.00 will have signature required
added to the package in order to ensure greater security. Overseas shipped Global Priority available for
books which are 8vo. and smaller (thick or large 8vo's and larger do not fit in the Global Priority
envelopes). All airmail shipping internationally to the EU & UK will now be $ 75.00-100.00 minimum in order
to account for the newly introduced "Right of Withdrawal." Other International destinations will be a minimum
of $ 45.95 for the first volume, and $ 40.00 per volume afterwards. Please be aware that SURFACE MAIL is NO LONGER available from the U.S..
Credit card orders please include entire account number, daytime phone, expiration date, 3-digit security code, billing & shipping
address. Additional costs will be charged to the purchaser at exactly the postage required to ship if
over the quoted amount. We hold books for 7 days pending receipt of payment by check, once we have received
confirmed order (duplicate orders will be replied to in order). **All books can only be returned if not as
described within 7 days and receive refund of original price, IF the purchaser has TELEPHONED to (360)
695-7767 (email notification WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED, NO REFUND WILL BE ISSUED) and checked first,
and if the book has been returned in condition shipped out (no exceptions), 20% restocking fee will be
applied.

Shipping terms
Orders usually ship within 2 business days. Shipping costs are based on books weighing 2.2 LB, or 1 KG. As all international surface mail has been eliminated from the U.S. as of Jan. 27, 2013, all overseas orders will be subject to 60% increased rates. Sets, and other heavy books which are ordered will be requested to include increased shipping costs, if these are not forthcoming immediately, the order will be cancelled. Additional costs will be charged to the purchaser at exactly the postage required to ship if over the quoted amount.
