About this Item
Inscribed on the half-title page: "To Robert Barth, with compliments, Archie Carr." Below it is written "Christmas 1958" in a separate pen, but it may also be in Carr's hand. Uncommon signed, and signed books by Carr in general seem scarce. Robert Hood Barth, Jr., was a professor of Zoology at the University of Texas at Austin and the author of The Invertebrate World, described as a landmark in the field. As the Austin American-Statesman reports, "Bob earned his PhD. at Harvard University under the tutelage of the venerable Ernst Mayr who told him, 'Robert, you need to spend some time in the tropics!' And that he did, residing for the summer of 1958 at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute's research center on Barro Colorado Island in the Panama Canal Zone, studying the dynamics of mixed-species foraging flocks of birds. . [He] often recounted stories of his stint on Barro Colorado Island as 'The happiest time of my life' ." As this book was inscribed in 1958, Barro Colorado may be where Barth ran into Carr. Carr was a decorated zoologist at the University of Florida, a turtle expert, and an acclaimed natural history writer, winner of the John Burroughs Medal for The Windward Road.High Jungles and Lowis Carr's second book and his first for a literary audience (his first book was a field guide to turtles); it recounts several years in Honduras and Nicaragua, a mix of adventure and ecology. With illustrations by Lee Adams. A very good copy with rubbing to spine ends, light soiling to board edges; in a good jacket with fading to spine and chipping/slight loss to spine ends and corners, some browning to edges, and some discreet insect damage, it seems, along the lower edge of each flap.
