Gross ( Hell Bent ) once again shows his street smarts when he sends Jack Mann, ex-cop and now a rent-a-PI, and Bonnie Hudson, TV weather announcer and would-be investigative reporter, on a snappy tour of the politics and media of New York City. Queens Borough President John Fasio, son of a disgraced former Democratic boss, is a well-meaning sort who is preoccupied by a mother with Alzheimer's and a hypochondriac wife. Unfortunately, honest Fasio relies increasingly on his driver/bodyguard Murray Gerber, "an ex-cop who had spent his whole adult life in a bad mood." When New York's mayoralty suddenly looks possible for Fasio, he mistakenly leaves the fund-raising to Gerber. By the end, Fasio and Gerber are mired in a tangle of murder and corruption and Mann and Hudson are in it from start to bloody finish. The book abounds with terrific political, press and cop stories. Even secondary characters--notably old Democratic warhorse Patsy Scotto (Meade Esposito?) and Brit media baron Basil Conway (Rupert Murdoch?)--add to the color and fun. Though Gross begins the story with smart Bonnie doing two dumb things and one mean thing, and he stretches New York's mayoral succession law, readers will overlook these lapses for the sake of a splendid, insightful and funny read.

Queens Borough President John Fasio is finally taking the cue from his manipulative assistant Murray Gerber and allowing himself to stand for the New York mayor's job when the current mayor resigns to run for governor. Fey weathercaster Bonnie Hudson (Hell Bent, 1992, etc.), impoverished by a five-minute fling in Atlantic City, has gone back to work for her old boss Harvey Levy, who's busy funneling campaign contributions to Fasio in hopes of leapfrogging to the head of the Queens cable-franchise line. Bonnie's ex-roommate, ex-cop Jack Mann, is working for an agency tailing Murray Gerber for an unnamed client. Obviously all these intrigues have something to do with each other, and watching them all come together with a kind of skittish majesty is a joy to behold. Gross's panorama of back-room Gotham politics is so exuberant that Jack and Bonnie's routine investigation of the inevitable homicides, when the plot finally kicks in, comes as something as a letdown: you wish these guys could go on stabbing each other in the back, like Dante's sinners, for all eternity. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. New York City borough politics is the loom upon which this political thriller of high ideals, corruption, and deceit is woven. John Fasio, the Queens borough president, is tapped for the mayoralty, but he needs campaign funds. His assistant, crooked ex-cop Murray Gerber, knows how to bend the rules to get the money, and Fasio turns a blind eye to his methods. Enter Patsy Scotto, a powerful party stalwart whose values drive him to thwart Fasio. Enter also reporter Bonnie Hudson and Jack Mann, a former cop turned private investigator. Political promises, money, and undercurrents of greed swirl about Bonnie and Jack as they follow a treacherous trail culminating in betrayal and murder. With a nice turn of phrase, Gross ( Hell Bent , Tor Bks., 1991) skillfully manipulates his characters, infusing each with sensibilities, motivations, and credibility. Exciting and engrossing.
