Hardcover, in dustjacket. Signed, inscribed by Derleth on the first blank. Laid-in are letters from Derleth to Robert Neal, a Mineral Point Wisconsin preservationist (Pendarvis House). Two of the typed letters are signed by Derleth and on Derleth's stationary. The third, also typed & signed) is on Arkham House stationary. All concerning Neal's purchase of copies of "The Hills Stand Watch"; and one additionally discusses Derleth's opinion on Neal's disposal of his book collection about Sauk County. One sentence in one of the letters caught my eye: "I would envy you your round of concerts &c, if I were capable of envy, which I'm not." The letters are dated 1959, 1960, & 1961. Also laid in are a few newspaper clippings included with a card stating that "The copy is inscribed to Mr. Neal". All in a couple of envelopes, one with the Arkham House emblem in the return address area, and one printed with "August Derleth". Some rubbing at the spine extremities and corner tips. 1-1/4 x 1/4" opaque stain on the front board. A bit of light soil. The front endpapers are quite age-toned (probably from newspaper clippings laid-in). Else pages clean. There is however, a bit of stale odor. The DJ is edgeworn, with chips at the corners and spine head; and ~1/4" loss at the spine tail. Tears, with wear & some loss along the DJ flap folds. Some rubbing, mottling to the the DJ panels. The DJ spine is quite sunned. An interesting, if flawed copy. ; GFH19B; 337 pages; Signed by Author. Seller Inventory # 52728
