Conference paper in original b/w illustrated yapp wraps 15x21cm. 37pp English text including 18 b/w photos, elevations, and floor plans. Wraps good, dusted and spotted, interiors fine. Inscribed by the author in Italian on the front blank to Derek Hill thanking him for "repetita juvant", dated Ravenna, 9.3.1999. Paolo Costa (1932-2019) was appointed as an adviser for archaeology in Oman in 1976. During 1976-86 he organised the Department of Antiquities, started a regional inventory of historic sites and buildings, and directed excavations in Salalah, Arja, Bawshar, Saruj and Ghafat. He conducted exploratory works on the Jebel Akdhar and in Muscat, Bahla, Ibra, Wad? Tanuf and Wadi Ma'awil. He was also Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Oman Studies (Proceedings of the Seminar for Arabian Studies 49, 2019). On arrival, he found the ancient mosques "at greatest risk" from new building activities. Thanks to Sultan Qaboos' desire to preserve Oman's heritage, the newly formed Ministry of National Heritage and Culture helped to ease this problem, restoring historic buildings through its Department of Forts and Castles, and conducting surveys through its Department of Antiquities. This work outlines recent conservation and preservation initiatives, building styles and techniques, and describes the mosques of Manah and Nizwa, the Great Mosque at Sa'al, the Masjids al-Shariqah and al-Shawadhna, and the Friday Mosques of Nakhl and Bahla.
