** INSCRIBED BY GERTRUDE JEKYLL ** NEW EDITION, 1900 ** HARDCOVER ** NO DUSTJACKET ** NOT A LIBRARY BOOK ** CLEAN, TEXT UNMARKED ** ILLUSTRATED ** NOTE: The photos you can access with this listing are of the actual book you will be sent. Published in London by Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900, with 301 pages, but with 53 full-page photographic plates not included in the page count. Book is dated 1900 on the title page, which is the same year as the 1st Edition, but nevertheless it also states ?New Edition? on the title page. Jekyll's unsigned inscription is on the front free endpaper, written in Jekyll's distinctive hand, and reads as follows: "For Sally's library at The Dingle which is both home and garden. Sept. 7, 1924". The book was a gift from Jekyll to Sally Field Stevens of Brooklyn, New York, who, along with her husband, owned a house known as The Dingle, surrounded by a large, lavish garden. The book appears it might have been purchased by Gertrude Jekyll herself at F. B. Neumayer's bookstore at 70 Charing Cross Road, London WC2. Neumayer's bookstore ticket is at the bottom of the front pastedown. The bookplate of Sally Field Stevens and her husband, Edward Francis Stevens, is affixed to the front pastedown. Edward F. Stevens was for years the librarian and instructor of library science at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, and was also a noted typographer, lithographer, and book designer. It is almost certain that he designed and printed the bookplate himself. The bookplate shows a drawing of The Dingle house surrounded by its gardens, and reads "A small house, a large garden, a few friends, many books". Below the Jekyll inscription is a gift inscription to Velma Birdsall "from Aunt Sally" (Stevens), dated 1960. Well-made book, bound in heavy-duty cloth (buckram)-covered boards with embossed gilt lettering and designs on the front and spine. While the book has no structural flaws, it does show signs of use and age. The cloth binding has mottled areas on both the front and rear boards (see photos). There is some wear and tearing to the cloth at the top and bottom of the spine. The book is, however, otherwise clean and stain-free, is square and straight, and remains firm in its binding, with no pages loose, torn, folded, creased, or missing. The hinges are sound and undamaged both inside and out, the corner tips show just a spot of wear, but the corners are have not been bumped. Aside from the inscriptions, we detected no other writing, underlining, highlighting, or markings of any such kind in the book. All pages are clean and stain-free, with a soft patina from age, and all text and is sharp and legible. All illustrations are present and intact. (NOTE: The inscription compares favorably with several other available writings and letters of Gertrude Jekyll, but has not been professionally certified.)
