A smart first US edition of this historical novel from English author Edith Pargeter, with illustrations. First US edition, originally published in the UK in 1936. Signed by the author to a bookplate at the front of the text. Illustrated with four plates. Collated complete. The author's first historical novel. A tale following Hortensius as he attempts to save the Christian wife of a friend in the arena. For this act he is forced to flee Emperor Nero along with a Persian slave. Written by Edith Mary Pargeter, an English author recognised for her historical fiction and honoured for her translations of Czech classics. In the original full paper covered boards. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor chipping to the extremities. Minor discolouration and the odd small mark to the boards. Cracks to the joints at the head and tail of the spine. Original price-clipped dust wrapper is also smart with light wear to the extremities and the odd small closed tear. Minor sunning and the odd small mark to the panels. Internally, firmly bound.
