Add to basket[New York]: Gemor Press, n.d. [but 1947]. First American Edition, Trade Issue. Slim octavo (21cm); publisher's orange pictorial cloth printed in black; 52pp.; decorations throughout. Cloth darkened and margins and worn at corners and spine ends, spine chipped with some loss, though contents remain clean and sound. A Good copy. Inscribed and signed on front free endpaper, "Dr Margaret Fries / Anaïs Nin / with thanks for understanding that beneath the poetry list psychoanalysis." One of the few works to come out of the Gemor Press, which Anaïs Nin and her lover Gonzalo More established in Greenwich Village in 1942. Though named after Gonzalo, Nin raised the money, taught herself to set type, and did the lion's share of the physical work for the press. Distribution in turn was aided by Frances Steloff at the Gotham Book Mart. Interesting association copy inscribed to the child psychologist Margaret Evelyn Fries, who was busy in the 1940s conducing and filming studies on newborn infants, including "Some basic differences in newborn infants during the lying-in period," a twenty-two minute film produced in 1944, and the 1941 pamphlet "Mental hygiene in pregnancy, delivery and the puerperium." Though both Fries and Nin were New York based professionals, how they knew each other is unknown--Fries is never mentioned in Nin's diaries. Franklin 2Ab.
