SIGNED LIMITED NUMBERED EDITION. Number 599 of 925 copies. Illumined by hand by Ida Metcalf. SIGNED in full by BOTH Ida Metcalf & Elbert Hubbard in black ink on limitation page. Illuminated on title page & the first letter of each page/sonnet. Also has Metcalf's holographic decoration with her signature. From limitation page: "Of this edition of 'The House of Life' there were printed and specially illumined by hand nine hundred & twenty-five copies. This book is number 599 (signed by both Hubbard & Metcalf)". Full title page as follows: "So This Then is The House of Life: Being a Collection of Sonnets by Dante Gabriel Rossetti - Done into a printed book by the Roycrofters at the Roycroft Shop, which is in East Aurora, N.Y., USA". With contents printed at rear. An early Roycroft publication & an excellent example of a 19th century hand-made book from the American Arts & Crafts movement. Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915), prolific American writer, publisher, artist, & philosopher, was an influential exponent of the Arts & Crafts movement. He was born in Bloomington, Illinois, & died when the ship he & his wife were on (RMS Lusitania) was sunk by a torpedo from a German submarine off the coast of Ireland. Bound in publisher's original half suede leather & grey boards, bright gilt title to front board, gilt-lettered brown leather label to spine, top edge gilt, deckle fore & lower edges, grey endpapers, Roycroft watermark paper. The original silk ribbon page marker has become detached and is now laid in. Suede slightly rubbed, tips worn through to boards, some marginal toning, two former owners neat ink names to front pastedown & ffep, otherwise a nice clean tight solid leatherbound copy. 114pp. RARE.
