Synopsis

The Hundred-Year House takes the reader from cars stuck in the sand of Northwest coastal beaches to glacial water too muddy to drink in the Cascade mountains. In poems of place ranging from clamming on the Long Beach Peninsula to meteor showers on Mountain Hood, the book presents life in a landscape that puzzles and soothes. Tsunamis, ice-storms, and mosquitoes provide a backdrop to a family learning to stay put.

About the Author

Michael McDowell's poetry appears regularly in Windfall: A Journal of Poetry of Place, which he has co-edited with Bill Siverly since 2002. His prose about nature and landscape writing has appeared in the anthologies The Ecocriticism Reader (University of Georgia Press), Reading the Earth (University of Idaho Press), and Fifty Key Thinkers on the Environment (Routledge). A graduate of Stanford University with a PhD from the University of Oregon, he teaches literature and writing at Portland Community College in Portland, Oregon.
