Autobiographical account by Swallow (1839-1930), "erroneously called 'The Fighting Parson'") in which he reflects on his life & career, politics, & world events. After returning from service in the Union Army during the Civil War, he joined the Prohibition Party & became a leading figure in the temperance movement. He ran for President in 1900 & remained active in politics & the Methodist Church. Though there is no date in the book, research places it from 1909; it is SIGNED by the Author with a personalized inscription dated 1913 to ffep. In 432 pages with pen-and-ink sketches & engravings throughout text. Hardcover octavo has green cloth-covered boards stamped with gilt lettering to front & spine (completely faded to the latter). Condition is VG+: extremely clean & bright, binding strong & straight, though front hinge is partially split. Pages creamy white with moderate tanning, heaviest around edges, but completely unmarked. Modest rubbing to extremities & bumping/slight fraying to corners & spine tips. No DJ, likely as issue.
