First impression of the true first edition. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author, Lord Beveridge: 'Given to Sydney Gampel in the hope that he may enjoy some of this book as much as I enjoyed our Whitsun together at Eastbourne and Glyndebourne. Will Beveridge June 8 1960' in black fountain pen ink on the front free endpaper. ***Eighteen black and white plates including frontispiece and interesting folding family tree of the House of B. opposite page 16, and folding "Henry and Annette's Indian Establishments": (Rangpur; Bankipur; Fardipur - with positions and dates and wages of servants of the retrospective establishments). ***Very good in dark blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine. Edges of boards and head and tail of spine slightly rubbed and marked. Small surface "wrinkle crease" to bottom of front board not affecting interior. Pages clean. Spine tight. No dustwrapper. ***224 x 148 mm. ix-pages prelims plus 418 pages including epilogue, notes on some contemporaries of Henry Beveridge in India, postscript on Jeanie, acknowledgments, glossaries and notes on illustrations, persons and places, and index to rear. ***This is the first impression of the true first edition of 'India Called Them', SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the author, William Henry Beveridge. His family biography of the Noble House of B. which describes the lives of Henry and Annette Beveridge who were Victorian missionaries to India, and also the lives of his parents and some other contemporaries of Henry Beveridge in India. ***Scarce first impression of the first edition to find signed and inscribed by William Beveridge, his inscription to a friend dated in 1960 when Lord Beveridge was around ninety years old. ***Of interest to collectors of signed first editions by Lord Beveridge who was an important economist, politician and social reformer. His proposals provided the basis of the modern National Health Service, the Welfare State; and he also served in government under Winston Churchill.
