Add to basketFirst Edition (NAP). This is a very rare book. This book sold at Doyle's auction in 2018 for $593.00 (including buyer's premium). But that book was not signed. This one is. The inscription is on the first front end paper. It reads 'Mrs. Alma E. Beider, with special regard of the author. J.C.D.' (See photo). Who was J.C.D.? The other seller refers to him as J. C. Davis, but I was unable to find anything on the Internet around his name. If somebody out there know something and wishes to share it with me, I would appreciate it. The condition of the book is very good. You can see the covers in the photos. The gilt lettering on both the front and spine is quite bright. The covers are mainly clean. There's a small amount of light scratching on the front. The edges are solid with just one light indent on each middle edge. The corners have only a little bit of rubbing. That's the case also at the corners of the spine ends. The top edge of the spine has a slight bit of bending. The top page edge is gilt. It's in very good shape. The middle page edge is quite clean. The bottom page edge has just a tiny bit of light discoloration, having no impact upon the pages themselves. The book is square and solidly bound. There's a very tiny space over parts of the juncture between the front inside cover and first front end paper. The front cover is very firmly bound. It has no give at all. There is no space at all between the rear inside cover and the rear end paper or between it and any other pages. I didn't see any cracks or spaces between any of the facing pages in the book. There is one instance between pages 174 and 175 where there are a few teeny tiny pinpricks (or something like that, in other words nothing much of anything). Curiously there are four rear blank end papers (eight sides). The book has a frontispiece photograph of the author's love interest, Ida. It is in excellent shape. The interior the book looks very solid. I scrolled through the pages a number of times without finding any instances of conspicuous soiling. There is a tiny thin spot on the first Contents page. I didn't see any foxing. I saw only a few thin light creases. I didn't see any turned-down corner creases or placeholder creases. There are no attachments of any kind in the book. There is one stamp. It has the name of the previous owner. I brought the book from her estate many years ago. I also purchased a play that she had written, presumably unpublished. Her name was Marilyn J. Hatch. The stamp, as you can see, is on the page with the signed inscription. There are no other stamps or markings to be found anywhere in the book. And the author's signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere. From the author's Foreword: 'To pass suddenly out of the very tempest of business undertakings into the dead calm of another existence, stop all of the faculties and go quietly away to dreams and 'the recuperative wilderness,', is an experience that not all men have had, and the recital of it may not be without edification to some of my fellows. The personages introduced are taken from life and are put down with a free hand as the writer saw them at the time, one of them still colored by the phantasy she evoked. If the chapters convey in any small degree the conviction that external nature has a lesson of obedience and love they will have accomplished one of the purposes which the writer had in his mind.' The chapter headings are: The Glory of the Way, An Exquisite Metropolis, A Fair Maiden by the Way, The Canons Are the Admiration of the World, A City in the Clouds, The Convalescence of a Tired Brain, A Picture Drive, A Real Rocky Mountain Guide, Camping on Willow River, Campfires, Listening to the Birds, Pard's Antelope, Luke Buck the Cowboy and His Horse, Elk Hunting, A Black Tail Stag, A November Chill and the Return of the Exile.
