Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Toshiaki Sakuma (illustrator). 1st Edition. Stated First Printing, first edition. Signed and inscribed by the co-author Peggy Landers Rao. The inscription reveals something that makes this specific book special. The author writes: Dear Rosemarie + Steve, Little did I dream that the book you gave us on New York would be coming back to you on the cover of this book! Love, Peggy, Tokyo, 1987.' If you look at my photo of the front of the dust jacket you will see the referenced 'New York' book in the photograph, the book that Rosemary + Steve gave to Ms. Rao. As you can also see, the red covers are in exceptional condition, perfectly clean and free of any wear. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover, with nicely tight pages throughout, no binding issues. The inside covers and end papers are a textured beige color (see photo of the signed inscription). They are also perfectly clean and show no wear at all. The pages in the book are in very good condition as well. I'm not seeing any soiling. There aren't any turned-down corners or dogeared corners, no conspicuous creasing. There is a little bit of light rippling just off the top edge of the pages, quite minor. There are no markings anywhere in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. There are a great many color illustrations throughout. In fact, they are on all but a few pages. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It's in very solid shape. There are no tears. There is a tiny scuffed spot off the top edge of the spine and another tiny one off the top edge of the rear cover. The jacket is mostly quite clean. There is a light spot on the spine. The jacket has some very light surface scratches. The flaps are very clean and in very good condition. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. 'A treasure chest of ideas on how to use Japanese antiques in Western surroundings. The authors show how some foreign residents in Tokyo have incorporated 77 different kinds of antiques and folkcraft into their Western homes. Each instance is inventive, since every photograph shows a Japanese object used in a different role from its original function. A hibachi becomes a display chest, a narrow yukata fabric becomes an ingenious window decoration, a bamboo screen conceals a TV. Many of the items photographed have disappeared from everyday life in Japan. Summer puzzles even to the Japanese under the age of 50. The accompanying text reveals the background of all the objects shown, and suggests why they might be worth acquiring from an artistic point of view. The book becomes not only a shopping guide, but also an introductory overview to the Japanese culture for visitors, residents and anyone, anywhere, interested in Japanese treasures.''s.
