Born in Jenkins, Kentucky, Riffe worked at a local coal mine from the age of 14, initially as a trapper, and then as a mule driver. He joined the United Mine Workers of America, and was elected as president of his local union when he was only 16 years old. In 1933, he was appointed as a full-time organizer for the union, based in West Virginia and then moving upward in the labor movement. Grogan was a personal friend of Riffe and his family. Raymond D. Dzendzel [1921-2018] was an American politician who was a Democratic member of both houses of the Michigan Legislature between 1955 and 1970. He had an association with the AFL-CIO.
