Synopsis

The fascinating history of the SS Jeremiah O'Brien, one of two remaining Liberty ships of the 2,710 that were built during World War II. This vessel was at the D-Day landings and made eleven shuttle crossing from England to the beaches of Normandy. Fifty years later she returned with a volunteer crew for the 50th Anniversary of D-Day, the only ship of the original 5,000 vessel armada to return. She was featured in around-the-world television coverage of this event and was the centerpiece of commemoration ceremonies in England and France.

Today the SS Jeremiah O'Brien is an operating museum ship and periodically cruises San Francisco Bay. The author has given her complete history in an easy to read and well-written book

About the Author

Capt. Jaffee has written ten books on museum ships, maritime academy training ships and merchant ships. He is a graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and has sailed as a licensed deck officer in the merchant marine. Formerly Superintendent of the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet and later an adjunct professor at California Maritime Academy, he was chief officer (second in command) of the Jeremiah O'Brien on her return voyage to Normandy in 1994.
