Founded over a century ago in 1900, the Harcourt Bindery is the oldest and largest traditional bindery in America exclusively devoted to fine traditional leather bookbinding by hand. Joseph Roth was one of the greatest German-language novelists of the twentieth century, an Austrian Jew and brilliant journalist best known for The Radetzky March, his elegiac chronicle of the last days of the Habsburg Empire. Job, first published in German in 1930 as Hiob, is his moving reworking of the biblical story, following Mendel Singer, a poor and pious Jewish teacher in a Russian village whose faith is broken by a series of calamities before he emigrates to America. Its English translation was the work of Dorothy Thompson, the pioneering American journalist who would become the first correspondent expelled from Nazi Germany, and the novel remains one of the most affecting parables of faith and suffering in modern literature.
