Rare original Christmas card signed by John D. Rockefeller. Octavo, with an inlay black and white image of the Japanese teahouse on the grounds of Rockefeller's 'Kykuit' estate to the front. Boldly signed by John D. Rockefeller inside in fountain pen. The printed holiday greeting above reads in full, "With hearty Christmas Greetings and all good wishes for the New Year from John D.ÂRockefeller." A hand-written secretarial dedication lies below, "With highest regard for my distinguished kinsfolk." In very good condition with light toning. The piece measures 5.75 inches by 8 inches closed. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, secretarially addressed to "Mr. & Mrs. B. F. Rockefellow, Canon City, Colorado." The recipient, Rockefeller's cousin Benjamin Franklin Rockafellow (1835-1926), served in the Civil War, went West and fought Indians, and developed the Rockvale and Brookside mines in Colorado. For eight years, Rockafellow served as president of the Rockefeller Family Association. John D. Rockefeller (1839â "1937) was an American industrialist and philanthropist whose leadership in the oil industry fundamentally shaped modern capitalism. As the founder of the Standard Oil Company in 1870, Rockefeller pioneered strategies of vertical integration, market consolidation, and efficiency that established a near-monopoly over the petroleum trade in the late nineteenth century. His business practices, while often criticized for their monopolistic tendencies, also laid the groundwork for corporate regulation and antitrust legislation in the United States. In his later life, Rockefeller devoted much of his immense wealth to philanthropy, funding major institutions in education, science, and public health, thereby transforming both American industry and charitable enterprise.
