About this Item
The club s second publication. John Sutter Jr was the eldest son of Capt. John Sutter; he managed the Sutter properties during most of the critical period between 1848 and 1851, and was himself the founder of the city of Sacramento. By 18952, the Sutter holdings had all been lost, and Sutter Jr was a penniless exile in Mexico. He returned to California early in 1855 hoping to retrieve some of his lost fortune. Here, published for the first time, is the story of his life in California, telling how the property was lost and how he had been drugged and swindled. A few months after writing this, he moved again to Mexico where he became a successful business-man and public official. He never returned to California. His Statement is a straightforward and guileless account…and its revelations are essential to a true understanding of the Sutter family and their part in the early history of Sacramento. Perhaps nowhere else is the unprincipled scramble for land in the Sacramento Valley so well portrayed. The original manuscript is now in the collections of the California State Library. The author s own copy, with his signature and printed address label on the front paste-down. ##### CONDITION: A Fine, virtually pristine copy; no d/w, as issued. [An imperfectly bound copy with pages 25-28 preceding pages 21-24.]. Seller Inventory # m210915e

Store Description

As collectors ourselves, we know that sometimes a book arrives that just isn't quite what we expected, even though it was accurately described. More InformationWe ship via U.S. Postal Service. Shipping costs are based on an average weight, including packaging, of 2 LB, or 1 KG. We don't charge extra if you are somewhat above that, but If your book is very heavy or special handling is required we may add an extra shipping charge. This usually occurs only for books being shipped via priority mail or internationally; the extra cost for shipping can make the difference in whether we make a profit or take a loss on the sale. We will always contact you first to get your approval for the extra charge. Sometimes shipping doesn't cost as much as we estimate -- if it's a negligible amount we just let it be but if it is substantial, we refund the excess shipping. We accumulate the smaller amounts and make an annual donation to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. If you prefer shipping via UPS, Fedex or DHL instead, contact us for a quote.
INSURANCE: Except for very rare or costly items, we do not insure our shipments beyond the $100 USPS already provides for priority mail shipments only. Because lost packages are so rare, the cost of insurance for less costly items is more than the acceptable risk -- especially given the hassle and paperwork of trying to collect the insurance. This is especially true for international shipments. If we feel insurance is appropriate, we will quote you the extra cost for adding it.
For truly rare items, we may substitute UPS, FedEx, or DHL for the added tracking and security they provide. Depending upon the item, we may absorb the extra cost or we may quote you a higher rate.
INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS: Our shipping rates are for the estimated cost of postage. For purchases of 150US or less AbeBooks will typically collect any necessary VAT when you make the purchase. For items over $150, International buyers may need to pay an additional Duty or VAT upon delivery. For oversized or very heavy books, it is sometimes impractical to ship internationally and we reserve the right to cancel the sale if necessary. We will always contact you before doing so.
