In the color dust jacket repeating the cover illustration, price $4.50 intact on the front flap, National Book Award Prize Winner sticker affixed: light edge-wear, spine moderately sunned. Author inscribed on the ffep to Barbara Bader, with explanatory note laid in. Set in the American author's native Holland in the early 1900s. Winner of the Hans Christian Andersen and Newbery Awards. From the personal collection of Barbara Bader, critic, publisher of Kirkus Reviews and author of American Picturebooks from Noah s Art to The Beast Within (Macmillan, 1976.) The inscription reads "To Barbara Bader because she too is incandescent." The typewritten note explains she had used that adjective in her review of the book.
