"Philosophy was important to Smith throughout his scientific career, not an avocation to which he turned in later years. Kamongo . . . was an expression of his views of man's place in nature, a synthesis of the scientific, humanistic and philosophic traditions which have influenced the development of man as a biological, social and creative being" (Chasis & Goldring, Homer William Smith, p. 14).
