About this Item
Keats's Shakespeare, Caroline F.E. Spurgeon, Oxford University Press,Signed, First Edition, First Impression Spurgeon was the first female university professor in London, the second in England and was an expert on William Shakespeare. This book gives a fairly comprehensive description and in part a reproduction of the marks and annotations made by Keats in the whole of his reading of Shakespeare. It forms an authentic record of the study and the love of our greatest poet by the one whom many today place nearest to him. The book is a First Edition, First Impression signed by the author with a neat personal inscription to Mrs Ismay and date to the first front paper. There is also a book plate attached to the back of the front cover of Matilda Constance Ismay sister in law of the founder of the White Star Line. The book is in good condition. The binding is straight and tight, the boards are clean and the gilt lettering bright. There is a slight stain to the front cover, shelf wear to the top edge of the spine and some loss to the bottom edge of the spine. The end papers and pages are clean without marks or tears. This book cannot fail to to be of interest and value to all who care for English literature. Despite a range of works on Chaucer (recognised as an authority), Shakespeare and english literature in general this is the only known volume to carry Caroline Spurgeon's signature so a rarity indeed. Will be dispatched by courier, fully insured, wrapped in bubblewrap and a cardboard box. Seller Inventory # 01135
