The spine is toned, and the rear panel has a large toned area in the middle. A sound copy with secure inner hinges and clean text. INSCRIBED and signed by the author on the front flyleaf, "To Dr. Percy Williams / a (??) an about a baby / from a very grateful (??) father / March 17, 1925. / Sidney Howard". Sidney Howard (1891-1939) was an American playwright from California. "They Knew What they Wanted" was his second play. His first play was not well-received, but this work handled a delicate subject (deception, adultery and forgiveness) with such compassion that it made his name. He won the Pulitzer Prize for this work, with the committee stating, "We have chosen it positively, because we believe it would stand out in any season, as one of the best plays ever written by an American author. [It] treats a difficult these with rare human insight and even rarer philosophical profundity". Howard also wrote the screenplay for the movie version of "Gone with the Wind". He was killed on his farm in 1939, and he posthumously won an Academy Award for the screenplay in 1940.
