First edition, subsequent impression with number line '4 6 8 10 9 7 5'. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, WITHOUT DEDICATION, IN BLACK PEN, ON TITLE PAGE. Some edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners slightly bruised, slight browning to page block, slight lean. Not price clipped (£12.99), no inscription, internally clean and tight, overall a vg+ copy. 354pp. A victim of time famine, thirty five year old Kate counts seconds like other women count calories. As she runs between appointments, through her head spools the crazy tape loop of every high flying mother's life, client reports, bouncy castles, Bob The Builder, transatlantic phone calls, dental appointments, pelvic floor exercises, flights to New York, sex (too knackered), and stress busting massages she always has to cancel (too busy). Factor in a controlling nanny, a chauvinist Australian boss, a long suffering husband, two demanding children and an email lover, and you have a woman juggling so many balls that some day soon something's going to hit the ground. Pearson brings her sharp wit and compassionate intelligence to this hilarious and, at times, piercingly sad study of the human cost of trying to Have It All. Quite scarce signed.…

Review
The women in the offices of EMF [Kate's firm] don't tend to display pictures of their kids. The higher they go up the ladder, the fewer the photographs. If a man has pictures of kids on his desk, it enhances his humanity; if a woman has them it decreases hers. Why? Because he's not supposed to be home with the children; she is.There's inherent drama here: Kate is wildly appealing, and we want things to work out for her. In the end, the book isn't a just collection of clever lines on the theme of working motherhood; it's a real, rich novel about a character we come to cherish. --Claire Dederer
