THE LAND BEYOND THE RIVER.

(1973), 380pp. VG in VG, very lightly chipped dj. Inscribed, dated, and signed by the author. From the dj: "The saga of the Perkins family - Mommie and Poppie and and an ever-increasing brood of children. Mired in poverty in Appalachia, firm in Freewill Baptist Church beliefs that it is their duty to replenish the earth, ever on the move from farm to farm to try to eke out enough food for twelve hungry mouths - their treadmill is a familiar one to those acquainted with Kentucky mountain people. An uncle of Poppie's, who, long before, moved to Ohio and became a substantial and influential citizen, persuades the Perkinses that the Promised Land is just beyond the river. With Uncle Dick's help, it turns out to be just that. Settled on a farm for whose owner Poppie and all but the youngest children can work during the summer for good wages, dreams begin to come true in a small way.".
