About this Item
LUDWIG BEMELMANS, (AMERICAN 1898-1962) WATERCOLOR ON PAPER, FRAMED TO DIMENSIONS OF 17? X 14? SIGNED LOWER MIDDLE A Vibrant Original Watercolor painting on paper by Ludwig Bemelmans (see bio below). The art depicts a woman in portrait carrying a wide-eyed child in a papoose on her back. The woman is wearing a bright, vivid fushia toned robe, a large brimmed hat with a brightly colored papoose. Ludwig Bemelmans always considered himself an artist first, and an author second. This piece is richly toned in inks with watercolor wash in the classic Bemelmans style. Has an important, wonderful presence on the wall, presented in a silver rubbed wood frame and UV glass. Fully framed and glazed using 100% archival materials. ART IS 8? X 5? (Sight) FRAMED TO DIMENSIONS OF 17? X 14? PROVENANCE: The artwork is a unique original watercolor from a tipped in page from the book, ?The Donkey Inside?, the limited signed edition. The limited edition was an early Bemelman?s title in which he created a unique watercolor for each book. Each individual piece was rendered on a separate page and then later ?tipped in? to the book. The page was then gently removed from the book and framed (the process could easily be reversed if desired). The framed art will be accompanied by the book for provenance. Originally published in 1941, The Donkey Inside contains chapters that originally appeared in Town & Country, Vogue, Globe, and The New Yorker. Presented as a trip to Ecuador, this book is actually based on notes takes during several voyages through South America. Bemelmans says: ?In a sense it is a portrait of that continent, from Chile to the Panama Canal, but it is focused on Ecuador, because there I found, in stronger outline than anywhere else, the things particular to South America.? This piece is SIGNED by Ludwig Bemelmans lower middle. Original works of art by Bemelmans are extremely scarce with paintings/scenes from the characters of his books selling for over $22,000 Condition: The art is in excellent condition.
