Small 8vo, xi + pp396 plus 32 page catalogue to rear, complete with engraving on steel frontispiece and a further 18 b/w wood engravings, both full page and within the text. Hardcover no dust jacket. Handsomely rebound in quarter calf leather over marbled boards with five raised bands, gilt titles and blind tooled decorations to spine. Binding near fine. Inside Hand written to top of ffe paper "Mrs Bowan (?) with the kind regards of the Author", the pages are a little yellowed with age and the very odd spot of foxing with the frontis more so. An extremely nice copy of this scarce 1st Edition. Mrs Loudon (married to the Scottish botanist John Loudon) as well writing her books on horticulture was also a well known writer of Gothic fiction, fantasy and horror and an "early pioneer of science fiction".
