About this Item
This is a handsome copy of The Laws of Ice by Reynolds Price. The book is signed by Price on the title page. It's a very nice find for any Price collector. Published by Atheneum in New York in 1986. It was Price's second book of poetry. ******************* The dust-jacket write-up: Reynolds Price is one of America's rare men of letters. During the past twenty-five years he has steadily published the fiction, plays and essays that have won him a wide and loyal following. But the earliest strand of his work, and that which has followed the line of his own life most closely, is poetry. Though it contained the work of twenty years, his first considerable book of poems, "Vital Provisions", did not appear until 1982. His second, "The Laws of Ice", has accrued more rapidly; but Prices old strengths are intensified here and elaborated - the tense but lucid narrative impulse that recovers territory long ceded to fiction and makes each piece a discrete poet-to-reader communication, the always surprising lyric intensity of image and rhythm, and a range of tones and forms that proves more than adequate to assume the masks demanded by an unusually varied range of experiences and subjects. - The poems are divided into three parts. The first, among its other purposes, asks a series of implicit questions; the third attempts answers. The second part, called "Days and Nights", is a single long poem divided into thirty-five parts - the journal of a year in the poet's life - a year that moved, blindly though with dim forebodings, toward the discovery of a grave illness and its seismic unforeseen aftermath. The journal is an experiment both in the varieties of informal verse-speech and in the buried unity of all human lives, subject as they are to the always unforeseeable gifts and tolls of a daily fate that can only be met, then borne. ********************** TITLE : The Laws of Ice.
