About this Item
A perhaps unique historical proof copy of this otherwise unexceptional work of the 19th century What appears to be the original brown cloth with no title on spine Produced with a blank page alternating throughout with the printed pages, for proof comments and corrections, of which there are many hand-written corrections throughout These are in the apparent hand of William Bradford Reed, brother of the author, Henry Redd, who died in 1854, the year before publication I've checked a few of the specific annotations against the final book in Google Books and every one was actually changed in the final product The brother Reed apparently produced the volume as a memorial to his brother, as indicated on the dedication page He (WBR) also signed the volume on the front pastedown In addition, the title page has both the signature ("Ign F Horstmann") and signature stamp of Horstmann, a Catholic bishop of Cleveland The Dewey number 8204 R on the spine may have been the cataloguing of Horstmann's personal library, since there are no labels, marks or other indications that the book was ever in any other library William Bradford Reed (1806 â " 1876) was an American attorney, politician, diplomat, academic and journalist from Pennsylvania He served as a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1834 to 1835 He was elected Pennsylvania State Attorney General in 1838 and served as a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate for the 1st district in 1841 He served as US Minister to China in 1857 His pro-confederacy views put him in conflict with other Pennsylvania politicians He was a published author of multiple books including the biographies of his grandfather, General Joseph Reed and grandmother Esther de Berdt His brother was educator Henry Hope Reed Henry Hope Reed (1808 â " 1854) was an American educator He was considered the star of the faculty at University of Pennsylvania and was an early champion of poet William Wordsworth Ignatius Frederick Horstmann (1840 â " 1908) was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church He served as Bishop of Cleveland from 1892 until his death in 1908 411 pp. Seller Inventory # AA637
