About this Item
First edition under the editorship of Jac. Facciolati, folio, pp. [8], 760, [4], 887, [1]; title page printed in red and black, text in double column; full contemporary sheep, gilt spine in 7 compartments, raised bands, tan gilt-lettered calf spine label (partially perished), all edges red, marbled endpapers; boards quite scuffed and worn, spine gilt rubbed; contemporary bookseller ticket on front pastedown, textblock about fine. In this volume are joined some of the great names in the history of Renaissance and post-Renaissance classical scholarship; Nizzoli, Alexander Scot, Estienne Dolet and Jacopo Facciolati. Nizzoli's 'Observationes in Ciceroem,' first published in 1535, was recast several times and finally published by Alexander Scot as 'Lexicon Ciceroniaum,' and the title was adopted by Facciolati (1682-1769) for the present edition. His name does not appear on the title, but both introductions are signed by him. He no longer follows, he says, Nizzoli's system of page citations (of the Aldine edition) but prefers to use the sub-division of Cicero's works established by Alexander Scot. At the end, with a second introduction is Facciolati's much corrected and augmented version of Dolet's (1509-1546) 'Formulae linguae latinae elegantiores,' first published in 1539. Graesse IV, p. 680; Vancil, p. 176. Seller Inventory # 42916
