Inscribed by A. E. Wagstaff. Octavo. 526pp. Illustrated with photo portrait frontispiece, woodcuts. Publisher's green cloth, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in gilt and black, floral patterned endleaves. David S. Terry (1823 - 1889) was a California Supreme Court Justice and one of the authors of the state's constitution. He killed a US Senator (David C. Broderick) in a duel in 1859 and thirty years later attacked an Associate Supreme Court Justice (Stephen J. Field) and was subsequently shot and killed by Deputy US Marshall David Neagle. . Spine slightly wrinkled and leaning; boards gently rubbed and soiled; rear hinge cracked, front hinge starting; moderate uniform toning throughout; small bookplate to front pastedown. Very good.
