Rutherford B. Hayes (1822-1893), a Civil War general and governor of Ohio, won the presidency in one of the most disputed elections in American history and served as the nineteenth President of the United States from 1877 to 1881. Spiegel Grove was his estate at Fremont, Ohio. In very good condition, bookplate to the second free endpaper. An exceptional presidential association copy, being Hayesâ s own copy of his 1876 campaign biography. Life and Public Services of Gov. Rutherford B. Hayes was written by Russell H. Conwell (1843-1925) as a campaign biography for the presidential election of 1876. Conwell, a lawyer, journalist, and Baptist minister, would later become famous for his inspirational lecture ?Acres of Diamonds? and as the founder of Temple University in Philadelphia. The election of 1876, pitting Hayes against Samuel J. Tilden, remains among the most contentious in American history, with disputed returns from several states leaving the outcome unresolved for months until an electoral commission awarded the presidency to Hayes, an arrangement remembered as the Compromise of 1877.
