The author's signature is on a plate pasted on the front endpaper. The previous owner of this book had a large collection of signed books - he would mail authors for signatures, sometimes sending the book itself, sometimes just requesting a signed card to paste into the book. This is the first edition of the book from 1901. Hardcover, no dust jacket. Book condition is G-/F+. Text is clear of writing, markings, highlighting. Overall, text is bright and clean - but pages throughout have small, minor blemishes, such as small dot marks, faded dark smudges. There are two small, shallow book worm holes in the fore edge of the text block, affecting the fore edges of ~90 pgs. Top edge of text block gilted, with scratching on surface. Fore edge of text block roughly trimmed, with pages with longer edges bumped with small rips, chips and some fraying. Spine has a foreward lean to it. Binding sound - widening in the gutters in spots with binding thread visible, but overall robust. Hinges are tender (front ones moreso); front hinge gutter paper ripped with webbing visible, but webbing fully intact along gutter so still holding together very well. Hardcover board corners bumped, curling inwards. Fabric on boards has some dark spotting/soiling in spots; fabric on spine rippled/bubbling a bit; fabric has small rips and is fraying at joints at top/bottom of spine; boards edges rubbed; moderate bumping on top edges of boards.
