About this Item
8vo, orig. pictorial cloth, lettered and stamped in black. A near fine copy in near fine dustwrapper. Signed Presentation copy from the Author to Ivor Ingram. In a novel name 'London Circus' Henry Baerlein, whose published book on Mexico was so well received, introduces, under their real names, not a few literary and other celebrities of the day. Here is a good story which he tells of witty Charles Brookfield, the actor, afterwards Censor of Plays :- "Did they expect me to sign the Censorship and murmur 'Domino no dignus sum; Lord, I am not Galsworthy?'" One of the characters ia an art critic, of some pretensions, but little experience. Of him it is remarked that "Some one had explained to him the terms "Chiaroscuro," "Albert Cuyp," and "impasto," and "on Monday afternoon he started criticising art." On some colonial journals, I fear reviewing and "art criticism" -save the mark - are handed over to the police court reporter or the young gentleman who "does" the junior football.
